‘The emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior’ this is the best definition to understand what it the emotional intelligence. This kind of intelligence is investigated since 1980 and nowadays it’s used at school, work, and lifestyle.
On the first place, some studies have shown that people with high EI have greater health than other people. Markers of EI and methods of developing it has become more widely coveted in the past few decades. In addition to this, studies have begun to provide evidence to help characterize the neural mechanisms of emotional intelligence. This is useful to get more information of how our own emotions cause problems in our life like decreasing the efficiency in class, work or relationships.

Learning in school is a progressive, planned activity cast in the light of the firmly held belief that children are different from adults and that they need to be prepared for the adult world at the same time as they need to be protected from it. This conception of learning and the very idea of childhood are recent inventions. There are reasons to believe that, with the advent of an electronically networked society, the clear distinction between childhood and adulthood is disappearing. One thing is certain, whether it be via the media or directly in their lives, children are increasingly subjected to the whole range of emotions known to adults, not to mention a wide variety of relationships spreading from the best to the worst.
- What would be the consequences of introducing emotional intelligence in schools?
Introducing emotions in schools it could be a problem because nowadays the introduction of this would be a radical change! Yet schools do not change so quickly. Those people who have tried to introduce innovations in schools have come up against a huge resistance from teachers, parents and politic powers.
One possible solution, it could be introducing the emotions and the skills that we work with them in the spaces around school. During the breaks, for example. Daniel Goleman, the best investigator of EI, describes how appointed pupil mediators, once all involved know the rules of the game, resolve conflicts in the playground. With emotion intelligence you can improve skills like self awareness, managing emotions, empathy communicating, co-operation, and the skill how to resolve conflicts.

Nowadays, emotional intelligence is not one of the interests in schools even if it should be. We must work on this aspect so I believe your topic is a great option. I found your information interesting but maybe it should be more reflexive or dymaic and less theoretical, I mean, I would give it another point of view. Anyway, it doesn't really matter the organisation and the points you've chosen are great. Congratulations :)
ReplyDeleteGood work guys! I totally agree with you. We must form people not CPU's. As the video says: "Educating the heart is as important as educating the mind"
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it is very important that we work with children about feelings.
ReplyDeleteIn Childhood Education we should teach them how to express their feelings and that don't feel embarrased about that. So, I would like to be a teacher who introduces emotional intelligence in his class.
I really liked this post.
ReplyDeleteI think that sometimes we forget that the basis of everything is about education. All the social and personal problems are related with that and the basis of education, in my opinion, is on emotions and feelings.
The children are purely emotional, They are all that that the adults try to suppress. Because of that, I think that working through emotions and feelings in pre-school education could be a great revolution at cultural and social level to let people freely feel and act
Emotional intelligence should be easier to introduce in our schools. Maybe we can't teach it as a subject, but it's present through every content we teach. For example, whent talking about the environment or the different kinds of geological locations, we could have a small chat with our students and make them think about how things were last years and why our envoronment is damaged now, make the understand that this needs a change and that his change starts in heir mindset.
ReplyDeleteEmotional Intelligence is not only about ourselves, but about how we respond to the actions of others in our direct environment.
The emotional intelligence is, in my opinion, one of the most important psychological skills for the human being and teachers, the most of them, aren't working with it in the classroom, as you said. The emotional intelligence should be present even in pre-school education, having its complete development in primary school. To include it in the present education can be hard, but I think we can make it. To have a better world through better people is possible :)
ReplyDeleteRafa and Kevin, it was nice to see you guys taking on such an interesting topic! As you know I do share your enthusiasm for this aspect of education. However, there are a couple of problems with referencing in your work. For the first, you should see my comments on Mari Carmen and Rocio’s entry about mindfulness – you too quote someone and don’t say who came up with this excellent definition: “The emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior”! The second problem is that the fourth paragraph in its entirety and then parts of the following paragraphs are copied from the following source, but with no attribution whatsoever:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.connected.org/learn/school.html Remember that it’s important that academic work you hand in should be your own work or, if not, should be attributed to the original authors.
Finally I should say that I liked the video you chose a lot – it is very illustrative of the most important aspects of EI in the educational context.
