Dance is an art where the body moves along with music, as a form of expression, and personal interaction, with the purpose of entertainment, artistic or religious. It is also important for children because it promotes the development of their sensibility towards music.
Through dance we can help the child to gain autonomy, personal identity. Dance also promotes team work. It satisfies the child´s need of expression and creation, across the knowledge of his own body, and helps him to discover the multiple possibilities of movement that our body has.
In general, dance helps children to coordinate their movements and to organize and plan their actions. In addition, it´s an activity that can be performed by both boys or girls.
One of its main goals is to use the expressiveness of our body and the movement to communicate feelings, ideas, mood and to understand messages.
Dance could be used as an educational tool for two reasons:
-Dance is an important resource for the communication and the relationships.
-Dance is an activity that is related to physical and artistic education.
In pre-school education, the aim is not to train professional dancers but to help the making of a well-rounded person.
Games and class activities are based on situations where the children learn about themselves and the others under certain circumstances. There will be games in which they have to be the leaders, the pursuers or the pursued; games in which they only have to close their eyes and be by themselves, games in which they have to work together as a team to achieve a common goal, etc.
In addition, dance classes help develop other basic skills that the children will use all along their lives. These skills are: coordination, spatial conscience, memory, different ways of expression, concentration, auditory skills, and many others.
We have chosen this video because it shows some basic real exercises that could be done in a pre-school class. In the video we can see how the children try to move all their body parts, something that, in our opinion, is essential for the development of the corporal scheme. So, this way, we can help our children build their mental and physical development.

Dance is very important in preschool education because it's an important resource for the communication and the relationships. I totally agree with this post. It's very interesting. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your podcast. Dance is one of the best things to have a good time with children. I really liked your work!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, dance has multiple benefits. Through dance, children release energy, they communicate and socialize, they discover themselves, they become aware of time-space notions… However, I think it is important to differentiate between a spontaneous dance and a choreography. In my opinion, dance is a self-expression way, but if children are guided by teacher all time, they won’t expressing their own feelings, they only will copy their teachers. Therefore, I think teachers have to help students to discover the possibilities of movement of their bodies with some led sessions, but teacher also should provide children jam dancing sessions because these are the most natural.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! You have done a good job!
This post is very interesting for me. I'm totally agree with that dance is something important in education, especially for pre-school education. With dance the teachers can learn and develop aspects on their pupils that, with a book, they couldn't learn.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for your work girls!
I think the same as Cristina. the dance is very important in education, especially for pre- scool education and dance has multiple beneficts.
ReplyDeleteI think that dancing is an activity that children enjoy and can be applied in an educational way, so I'm totally agree with you, it is a really interesting post and also easy to read. Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteLucia, Lara, María P. and María S.C., very interesting and of course also connected to the theme of the TED video we saw in Raquel and Katia’s entry. I especially liked what you said about “In pre-school education, the aim is not to train professional dancers but to [contribute to] the making of a well-rounded person.” Another quote I like, in a similar vein, is from Gianni Rodari in”The Grammar of Fantasy” (1973/1996, Teachers & Writers Collaborative, New York): he advocates the promotion of creativity in schools “not so everyone can be an artist but so that no-one is a slave”! And the video is great – this activity is clearly one that can be fun not only for children but for the teachers too!
