The objective of this entry is to compare the
Traditional Approach with the Communicative Approach.
As you know, the Traditional Approach presents
the following characteristics:
- Memoristic and repetitive learning
- Development of reading and writing skills
- Learning of the grammar rules in an explicit way
- Learning the foreign language using your mother tongue
- Teachers play an active role
- Pupils play a passive role
- Teachers always correct the mistakes of their pupils
- Accuracy are more important than fluency
On the other hand, the Communicative Learning
Teaching Approach (CLT) presents these characteristics:
- Practical and meaningful learning
- Development of listening and speaking skills
- Learning of the grammar rules in an implicit way
- Encourage pupils to use the foreign language
- Teachers are guides
- Pupils play an active role, building their knowledge
- Teachers only correct the most important mistakes, repeating your wrong phrases in the correct way, being a referent
- Fluency are more important than accuracy
To clarify this information, we have recorded a video in which appear both approaches. As future teachers, what is the approach that you would like to use?
We have received an education based on the traditional approach and we think that it wasn't useful. We think that the knowledge acquired aren't balanced with the effort and time spent. In our opinion, if we had received an education based in a CLT approach, our English skills could be better. For this reason we have decided to ask some people about their experiences.
After speaking with some people between 20-25
years old, we can conclude that most of people of this generation have received
a traditional approach and they think that it have to change.

I have seen your post and of course communicatve aproach is much better than traditional one.
ReplyDeleteI am agree with the people who talks in the second video who say that their teachers had teach using the traditional way. Most of my English teachers did the same, by this reason I hope that we, as a future teachers, will teach using the communicative aproach because we know that it has much more advantages than traditional approach.
As a future teacher I want to use the communicative learning approach, of course. I’ve had English teachers of both types and I’m sure I’ve learnt more with those who spoke in English and made us play games.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s obvious that if anyone wants a group of children to learn English, they would have to facilitate them the more the best experiences to practise it, and from my point of view, this starts by speaking to them in English.

ReplyDeleteI think that here in spain the most of teachers use traditional approach, perhaps because this kind of teaching is very easy and comfortable for them. Nonetheless one of the drawbacks of this approach is that is boring for the students and, in my opinion, for the teachers too.
In a class, is very important to create a good environment without boredom or shouting and the Communicative Learning Teaching Approach try to get it.
This way, I think that the new generations of teachers must use the Communicative Learning Teaching Approach because, as you say, it has many advantages for the teachers and for the students.
In the last decades the world have changed a lot and nowadays we don't see it the same way our parents did. Why do I say this? Because it means that this past generations used traditional approach because they were in a totally different environment based on a social hierarchy. Nowadays we know that any kinf of hierarchy is purely human-imposed, and that we al have different potentials we can get benefits from. Communicative approach is just the beggining of what education should be. If the world changes, education must change too.
